Will Mayweather vs. Maidana unfold like Canelo vs. Angulo?

By Rocky Esposito: First, I would just like to mention that I really feel bad for Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo (22-4, 18 KO’s). Last night, as we all know, was an extremely rough night for him. And, whether you are a fan of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s), or not, he deserves nothing but credit for his dominating performance. To be sincerely honest with you, I like both fighters, and I was hoping to witness a very competitive fight. However, the fight did not unfold that way. Canelo’s hand speed, power and accurate counter punching were just too overwhelming for Alfredo Angulo.

Now, let’s discuss the upcoming Championship bout between Floyd “Money” Mayweather (45-0, 26KOs) vs Marcos “El Chino” Maidana (35-3, 31KOs). First, I want to point out from the very start that I hope this fight does not resemble the one-sided outcome of the Canelo/Angulo fight. Personally, I like Marcos Maidana as a fighter. He has power, a lot of determination & heart. *All points that Floyd Mayweather actually acknowledged just the other day. When Floyd was interviewed by Showtime just prior to the Canelo vs Angulo fight, he was asked about Adrian Broner & Maidana. Floyd basically stated that in the Broner/Maidana fight, it seemed to him that Maidana just wanted the fight more (I agree). Floyd also acknowledged that Maidana has KO power in both hands (I also agree).

Marcos Maidana may not be the most technically sound Boxer alive, but he sure is entertaining. When Maidana steps into the ring, you know there will be a healthy dose of action and drama. Also, he has Robert Garcia as his Trainer. And, in my opinion, Robert Garcia was 2013’s Trainer of the Year. All of this being said, does Marcos Maidana have a real chance to beat Floyd? (Before you mention it, I already know. Maidana always has a Punchers Chance).

Here is why I made the claim in the title of my article that I did… Not to simply get your attention, I wrote it because there is a very real possibility of it happening. Whether you are a fan of Floyd Mayweather or not, you have to be honest in assessing this fight. Floyd is levels above Maidana when it comes to hand speed. And Counter Punching? Floyd is the best in Boxing. There is a great chance that when Maidana let’s his punches rip, Floyd will beat him to the punch, consistently. However, a plus/key for Maidana in this area is the angles that he throws his punches from. He does not telegraph all of his punches. He throws them from all different angles, which can be a major key to his success.
