Tyson Fury says he’s not interested in Tony Thompson fight

By Scott Gilfoid: Moments ago, heavyweight Tyson Fury (22-0, 16 KO’s) says he has no interest at all in accepting the challenge of former two-time world heavyweight title challenger Tony Thompson. Fury says he wants to wait on his July 26th WBO heavyweight title eliminator bout against Dereck Chisora (20-4, 13 KO’s), and then face IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko if Fury is able to get past Chisora.

“Granddad [Thompson] has been calling me out. He’ll find someone eventually to fight. I’ve got Dereck Chisora and Wlaidmir Klitschko to face.”

Fury is making the right move in not accepting the 42-year-old Thompson’s challenge, because the odds are high that Fury would lose that fight, and then end up losing out on both his Chisora and fight against Klitschko. Thompson does really well against guys with no power like Fury, and it would be a huge blow to Fury’s career to be beaten by someone so old.

We saw in Fury’s recent fight against Joey Abell that he really doesn’t have the kind of talent that he’s going to need to in order to compete when he finally steps it up. Abell is someone who had recently beaten easily beaten by Kubrat Pulev, but Fury really had to struggle to beat Abell. He was tagged by a lot of big shots from the fighter.

It’s kind of jarring to think that the winner of the Fury-Chisora 2 fight will be getting a world title shot against Wladimir, because both guys are so badly flawed. Fury has never beaten anyone good, and he’s looked terrible in wins over guys like Abell, Kevin Johnson, Steve Cunningham, Vinny Maddalone, Martin Rogan, Neven Pajkic and Nicolai Firtha in his 7 fights since his win over Chisora back in 2011.

Chisora has looked mediocre in beating his last 5 opponents. Chisora doesn’t have the skills or size to hang with Wladimir, and he’ll be blown out in a few rounds if that fight takes place. Fury has the size to stand in there with Wladimir, but not the power, speed, chin, experience or skills.
