Tyson Fury and Dereck Chisora to fight for British heavyweight title

fury11By Scott Gilfoid: The British Boxing Board of Control has approved a request for the fight between Tyson Fury (22-0, 16 KO’s) and Dereck Chisora (20-4, 13 KO’s) to have the British heavyweight title on the line, according to the Lancaster Guardian. Chisora’s promoter asked to have the British title on the line, and BBBofC granted it. It’s hard to imagine why Fury and Chisora would want to fight for the British title, because they should be aiming a tad bit higher than a domestic level strap, shouldn’t they?

I tend to see fighters that go after British straps as either guys just starting out or fighters that don’t have the talent to go after world title straps. Is this the ultimate fate of Chisora and Fury with them fighting it out for a British title? Chisora is 30-years-old, and it’s difficult to imagine why he’d want to be fighting for a British title, especially when he’s holding the EBU title.

The Fury-Chisora fight still doesn’t have a date or a venue for the fight, but the fight should take place unless Chisora faces Kubrat Pulev and wind up losing to him. Chisora said on his Facebook page: “Dereck Chisora vs. Kubrat Pulev, Purse Bid on March 18!!” If Chisora takes that fight, he’s going to lose. There’s no ifs or buts about it. Pulev is too good for him and he’ll beat him. I guess Chisora and Fury can still fight it out for the British strap after Chisora loses to Pulev, although I honestly can’t really see the point at all in them fighting.

If Fury does face Chisora this year, then he’ll likely take a tune-up fight before that because that’s what’s being talked about. He gained a lot of weight in being out of the ring for 10 months, and he definitely needs another tune-up to get him ready for the Chisora fight. Fury looked horrible in defeating Joey Abell last month. Abell, a fighter with no hand speed at all, was able to nail Fury with big punches that he shouldn’t have been able to.

What’s particularly sad is the thought of Chisora and Fury fighting in a WBO eliminator bout. I just don’t see the logic in that fight being a WBO eliminator bout. But then again, the WBO recently had the Denis Boytsov vs. Alex Leapai fight as a WBO eliminator, so I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they have the Chisora-Fury fight as one as well.
