001_Canelo_with_fans(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Hector Gonzalez: Many fans are using the Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) vs. Erislandy Lara fight as an indicator of what’s going to happen this weekend between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) vs. Angulo. These fans are saying that Angulo looked good against Lara, almost stopped him and therefore Canelo is in big trouble. In my opinion these fans either just want to see Canelo lose and using selective reasoning to justify their claim, or they might not be educated enough about Angulo’s abilities. I’ll say it now, Canelo is going to beat Angulo, possibly even KO him.

It’s important for readers to erase what happened between Angulo vs Lara for a second and think about what happened between Angulo vs Jorge Silva, the 19 year old kid that was giving Angulo a run for his money just 6 months before Angulo faced off against Lara.

I guess it’s possible to drastically improve in 6 months especially with the help of a trainer like Virgil Hunter. Unfortunately though, this is not the case. To be fair, the Angulo that fought Lara ‘appeared’ to be a much better improved version of Angulo than the one that fought Silva. The key word though is ‘appeared’, this is one of the those instances when ‘things are not what they seem’. Let me explain.

For those that don’t know the back story between Lara vs Angulo, allow me to break it down for you. Erislandy Lara was told that the fight was going to have a rehydration clause of no more than 10 pounds. A Golden Boy representative went into Lara’s locker room to instruct Lara that if he was over the the 10 pound rehydration clause he would not be allowed to enter the ring. Lara walked into the ring weighing 164, unfortunately the rehydration clause only applied to Lara and not Angulo who walked into the ring at 174. There was also controversy over the ring size which was a small ring and not the standard middleweight ring. To put it bluntly, Lara was set up. If both fighters were to have weight in at 164, I think we could all agree that the outcome of the fight would have been different.

Here’s my prediction, Canelo will control the fight with a solid crisp jab. Angulo will never be able to land his power shots, and Angulo will be getting caught with everything that Canelo throws.

I see this fight being stopped, and I can’t realistically see Angulo winning the fight.
