kovalev5By Allan Fox: WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalv (23-0-1, 21 KO’s) will be making his second defense of his WBO 175lb title this Saturday night against unbeaten and untested Cedric Agnew (26-0, 13 KO’s) in a fight card televised by HBO from The Ballroom, at Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

Kovalev, 30, is biding his time against the likes of #14 WBO Agnew while he waits for much bigger unification bouts against guys like Bernard Hopkins and Adonis Stevenson. Those are the fights that Kovalev wants, but getting those fights made could prove impossible. Those fighters have a good thing going for them and they’re not going to hurry into a fight against a puncher like Kovalev.

Agnew, 27, is totally untested at this point in his career. He recently struggled to defeat Yusaf Mack by a 12 round decision in his last fight in April of last year. It’s not a good sign that Agnew has been inactive for the past 11 months going into Saturday’s fight against Kovalev.

When you have contenders fighting once a year like Agnew, that’s not the idea situation for him fighting for a world title. But this is an optional title defense for Kovalev, and Agnew has obviously been selected due to him having an unblemished resume more so than him being a good opponent for Kovalev to fight.

There are arguably much better fighters that Kovalev could have faced instead, but they didn’t have Agnew’s unbeaten record. In other words, they had actually fought someone good enough to beat them in the past. Agnew hasn’t been put in with someone good until now.

Agnew should last one or two rounds before Kovalev knocks him out. Hopefully, Kovalev faces better opposition after this instead of picking out bottom ranked fighters.

Also on this card will be light welterweights Karim Mayfield and Thomas Dulorme fighting for the vacant NABF light welterweight title. It should be a good fight. Mayfield has a recent win over Mauricio Herrera, and he’ll likely beat Dulorme unless he’s overwhelmed by his power.
