Mayweather vs. Maidana: Mega Fight or Mismatch?

maidana424242By Chris Cook: Pound for pound king Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather (45-0, 26 KO’s) faces off against Marcos ‘El Chino’ Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) in a pay-per-view clash on Showtime at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada on May 3rd in an event titled ‘The Moment’.

When this fight was announced the only ‘moment’ I could think of was the one when Mayweather decides to knock Maidana out.

Due to the sheer dominance of Mayweather in his fights, the majority have looked like mismatches but that was after the bouts had taken place. This one, however, looks over before it has even started. Mayweather has beaten Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Robert Guerrero, Miguel Cotto, and Victor Ortiz in his last four fights dating back to 2011.

Some fans and critics are saying that Maidana has a punchers chance against Mayweather on May 3rd. I agree that Maidana has one chance. Sadly, however, that chance is no chance at all in this fight. Mayweather has too many skills for the Argentinian Maidana to deal with, and the hand speed alone will likely be too much for Maidana to handle in this fight.

Maidana comes into the contest off the back of 3 KO victories against 3rd rate fighters and an unanimous decision against untested Adrien ‘the problem’ Broner, but the problem Broner has, is that he’s been found out when dining at the top table in the welterweight division (and I use the term ‘top table’ lightly).

In the Broner fight the wheels came off badly for the Argentine with him fading near the end, and if that happens again on May 3rd I can see the bout ending the same way for Maidana as it did for Ricky Hatton in 2007 with a late stoppage victory for Mayweather.
