Mayweather Sr. wonders why Angulo wasn’t hitting Canelo hard

Canelo Alvarez v Alfredo Angulo(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Allan Fox: Sounding very suspicious, Floyd Mayweather Sr. questioned after tonight’s fight between Alfredo Angulo (22-4, 18 KO’s) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) why Angulo wasn’t trying to hit Canelo with full power on his shots like he’d one in the past in his fights. From Mayweather Sr’s perspective, Angulo wasn’t trying to hit Canelo hard at all in their fight on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, and he wonders why he didn’t.

Canelo won the fight by a 10th round stoppage, and dominated every round. But what was missing was Angulo’s own power. He always punches much harder than what he showed tonight, and suddenly his power disappeared from his last fight in June of last year to this one.

“It didn’t seem like he [Angulo] was throwing punches back to try and hurt Canelo,” Mayweather Sr. said to esnewsreporting. “It just looked like he was taking punches to me. It just seemed to me like he wasn’t trying to hit Canelo back hard at all. He wasn’t coming in strong; he was taking punishment.”

I have to agree with Mayweather Sr. on what he saw. After having seen Angulo fight for years, including watching his recent fight against Erislandy Lara, it looked like Angulo was throwing with less than half power on his punches and just taking shots. Why he wouldn’t throw with full power is anyone’s guess, but I definitely agree with Mayweather Sr. that Angulo looked like he was taking it easy on Canelo. There could be many reasons for this. The one thing that jumps out at me is maybe Angulo was trying to tire Canelo out by setting him up for the later rounds. But that doesn’t make much sense because the fight was halted in the 10th.

I saw Angulo hit Canelo hard exactly three times tonight with the kind of power that he would normally throw with every punch in his other fights. Why Angulo wasn’t throwing with full power with every shot is hard to understand for me. I don’t agree that he was weight drained. I just think he looked like he was purposely throwing with half or even less than half power tonight. That’s why it’s so hard to figure out this fight. Why did Angulo fight like that? His own trainer Virgil Hunter was practically begging him to put power on his shots, but he just couldn’t or wouldn’t do it.

Canelo’s win is kind of tainted in my view because of Angulo not throwing back shots with power tonight. He’s a lot better than he showed tonight, and a lot more powerful. He reminded me of a Ferrari automobile staying in 1st gear the entire fight, and not shifting into the higher gears for some reason. Was it because Angulo was sick or what?
