Mayweather needs a big fight for his undercard

mayweather644By Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. recently stirred things up a bit by offering Amir Khan a fight in the future if he would agree to fight Adrien Broner on his undercard on May 3rd. Mayweather has selected WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana to fight on May 3rd, and this could turn out to be a real disaster for Mayweather, because Maidana isn’t a popular fighter and he doesn’t speak fluid English. Getting fans interested in a Mayweather-Maidana fight could end up being a very tough task for Mayweather. The one ace in the hole that Mayweather has is his little brother Adrien Broner that he can add to his fight card.

Broner is already talking about it being a done deal that he’ll be fighting on the card, but the opponent that he ends up facing has got to be someone with a big enough name to where it’ll interest the average boxing fan. Amir Khan has been mentioned for the fight, and he seems very interested in taking it. But lightweight John Molina is being talked about as Broner’s opponent for the fight, not Khan.

That means Mayweather will get very little out of having Broner on his card, because he can’t have Broner-Molina as his co-feature without wasting the spot. That’s a fight similar to Broner’s past mismatches when he was beating lightweights like Gavin Rees and Antonio DeMarco.

Mayweather needs to have a really big fight as his co-feature bout because his fight against Maidana will likely bring in less than huge pay-per-view numbers. It might be that Golden Boy Promotions doesn’t want to sacrifice Broner against Khan, because if Golden Boy wanted to make this fight then Mayweather wouldn’t have to be doing all the leg work himself in trying to put it together.

If Mayweather wants Broner on his undercard then he needs to make it conditional that he face someone like Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse or another top fighter, because that’s the only way that Broner brings value to Mayweather. He won’t help Mayweather if he winds up fighting someone like Molina or another weak lightweight. If Golden Boy wants to drop Broner back down to the lightweight division then they should match him against Terence Crawford, Miguel Vazquez, or Richard Abril. It’s got to be a really good fighter to bring anything to Mayweather’s undercard. Just having Broner on his card is meaningless unless he fights someone really good.
