Floyd Mayweather Jr. Announces Fight Against Marcos Maidana(Photo Credit: Ed Mulholland/Golden Boy Promotions) By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. spent a little bit of time building up Saul “Canelo” Alvarez today during his press conference to discuss his May 3rd fight against Marcos Maidana. Instead of focusing entirely on the Maidana fight, Mayaeather chose to talk about Canelo, Alfredo Angulo and Erislandy Lara.

“Canelo’s one hell of a fighter,” Mayweather said. “Angulo, non-stop action. Lara, he can fight. He got the job done, but Angulo was on his a**. But Canelo’s a different breed. Everybody thinks because of the way I made Canelo look, they’re going to be able to do the same, which is not true. Canelo is a smart fighter; he’s strong, he can box, and he can punch with either hand. Marcos Maidana, young, strong, and tough competitor, a guy I know I can’t overlook. You can never take any guy for granted. We got three more fights after this. Let’s take it one fight at a time. Floyd Mayweather is not scared of nobody. I’m not ducking nobody. I’ve earned my stripes, so I can pick and choose who I want to.”

Canelo need to live up to all the good things that Mayweather said about him, because if he can’t get past this fight then it’s going to be a huge blow to his career. Getting beaten by Mayweather wasn’t a huge shock to Canelo’s career due to Mayweather having so much talent. But if Canelo can’t get past Angulo tonight, then there’s no excuses for Canelo. A loss to Angulo would prove a lot of Canelo’s critics right about him having done well mainly because of Golden Boy Promotions’ match-making all these years.

The critics see Canelo as having fought mostly welterweights while during the last three years, and they don’t see him as being a fighter that is as good as his hype. His loss to Mayweather last year was so one-sided that it was hard to see any good in Canelo’s game. But tonight, Canelo will have a chance to prove his doubters wrong by going out there and beating Angulo in a convincing manner to where he leaves no doubt in people’s minds.
