Marcos Maidana: Prey or Predator?

mayweather4544By Yannis Mihanos: Marcos “El Chino” Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s), since his last defeat in 2012 at the quick hands of Devon Alexander, has enjoyed a strong run of victories over Jesus Soto Karass, Martin Angel Martinez, Josesito Lopez and most recently Adrien Broner.

In this winning streak there is great contribution by his new and very capable trainer Robert Garcia. Last December in Maidana’s win over Broner, he showed more foot movement t and the same old aggression. This is the same aggression that had made him famous.

Maidana is now currently at the last stage of the preparation for the biggest fight of his career on May 3rd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas , Nevada in his fight against the pound-for-pound king of boxing Floyd Mayweather Jr.

At this sort notice (late February) and for this kind of fight, Maidana has indeed very little time for improving or changing tactics and style. That I think is a little bit unfair but at this moment in boxing, we all know who’s calling the shots: Mayweather Jr. He is the number 1 and so he is entitled to do what he wants to.

Usually, big fights get announced early on so they can get nicely promoted and the fighters to be sufficiently prepared. But that certainly didn’t happened here. It seems to me that a lot of discussion and confusion took place before the final selection. There was a lot of precious time lost. Now the question is: who favors from this lack of time? Certainly not the TV channel Showtime and certainly not Maidana.
Also, the other fights on the undercard don’t impress me at all: Adrien Broner vs. Carlos Molina, Amir Khan vs. Luis Collazo, J’Leon Love vs. Marco Antonio Periban. These are matches with clear favorites. Maidana surprised many, last December with his victory against Adrien “The Problem” Broner but can he do it again?

Is he going to this fight like a prey or like a predatory wolf? He has certainly been treated as prey so far and as such he is expected to lose. But let’s not rule him completely out yet. There is always the possibility that he will surprise us all.
