Malik Scott wearing a paper bag over his head doesn’t mean he’s coming to lose to Deontay

By Scott Gilfoid: A lot of people are making a big deal about how Malik Scott (36-1-1, 13 KO’s) wore a paper bag over his head for his weigh-in with Deontay Wilder (30-0, 30 KO’s) on Friday. Some fans have things twisted by thinking that Scott wearing a bag over his head is code for him bagging it on Saturday night and just coming into the fight to flop on the canvas for the 10 count the first time Deontay nails him with a halfway respectable right hand.

Malik would never take a dive in the fight, as he’s not a quitter and he’s not afraid of the talented 6’7″ Deontay. To be sure, Scott may end up losing the fight by an early knockout, but he lose because he went out and flopped on the canvas like a big fish.

As to why Malik chose to wear a bag over his head, he did it just to entertain the fans. I mean, this isn’t some kind of placating type of thing where Malik is trying to act subservient to Deontay so he’ll go easy on him on Saturday night. Scott is just letting fans know that it’s going to be an entertaining fight. I personally recommended that Scott hold a big placard in his hands with those words written on them instead of wearing a bag over his head, but he must have come up with this idea at the last second and thought it was a good one. I’ve never seen a fighter ever do that before, so it’s definitely a first. Scott has broken new territory with the bag over the head bit.

The Deontay-Malik fight will be taking place at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, in Puerto Rico. The fight card featuring Danny Garcia vs. Mauricio Herrera will be televised on Showtime, and the Deontay vs. Scott fight is the big co-feature bout. Already more than a few fans have already chimed in about Golden Boy Promotions having their show backwards by putting the most interesting fight on the card – Deontay-Malik – as the co-feature instead of the main event. They also blew it by putting the Daniel Ponce De Leon vs. Juan Manuel Lopez fight too far down on the card. That fight should be the co-feature behind the Deontay bout.

I hate to say it but the Danny Garcia vs. Mauricio Garcia fight should be the third fight from the top because absolutely no one cares about this fight at all. Golden Boy and Showtime have a tin ear to what fans actually care about in terms of this fight card. If it had been me calling the shots at Showtime, I would have told Golden Boy not to waste the fans’ time by trying to put the Garcia-Herrera fight as the main event because no one wants to see that fight. Deontay is the star here, and the Lopez-De Leon fight is the 2nd most interesting fight on the card.
