By Jim Dower: Fighting for the first time in two years, 33-year-old lightweight Michael Katsidis (29-6, 24 KO’s) halted journeyman Eddy Comaro (27-18-5, 11 KO’s) in the 3rd round on Friday night at the Rumours International, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. Katsidis knocked Comara down three times in the fight in dropping him once in the 2nd and two more times in the 3rd round before the referee halted the fight. Comara appeared to lose interest in the fight after getting hit in the back of the head with a rabbit punch in the 2nd round.

Comara tried protesting the illegal punch to the referee, but he wasn’t interested in giving him a timeout to collect himself. Seconds later, Katsidis stormed Comarao and threw a flurry of punches that resulted in Comarao going down with what appeared to be another punch to the back of the head. The referee counted the knockdown and ignored Comara’s protests that he’d been hit in the back of the head. The round ended shortly after that, but Comarao appeared very angry at the referee for failing to do something about the punches to the back of the head. In between rounds, the referee motioned towards Comara for him not to duck his head when fighting.

In the 3rd, Katsidis went after a seemingly reluctant Comara and hit him with a flurry of punches to put him down on the canvas. After getting knocked down, Comara briefly fought with intensity in going after Katsidis and tagging him with 8 big shots to the head that backed Katsidis up to the ropes. However, Comarao stopped punching and this allowed Katsidis to go after him and hit him with another flurry of shots, causing him to hit the deck. Comara got back to his feet, but the referee stopped the fight anyway.

Katsidis looked good in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, and showed the same intensity and power that he had in the past. He fought well on the inside and did a number on Comara.

This opponent was made to order for Katsidis, and it’s difficult to imagine him being able to beat a top lightweight in the division. If this had been someone like Terence Crawford or Richard Abril in the ring with Katsidis in this fight, he’d have lost. Those guys are young and would be very difficult opponents for someone like Katsidis to beat.
