Herrera wants rematch with Danny Garcia

garcia68By Dan Ambrose: After what many people saw as a pure robbery last night in WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia’s controversial 12 round majority decision victory over Mauricio Herrera (20-4, 7 KO’s) at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Herrera is saying that he wants a rematch at 140 lbs if Garcia doesn’t move up in weight to 147. Garcia was hinting after the fight that he may move up in weight due to the problems he had in making weight for the fight. He blamed his poor performance on his problems making weight in part.

“I don’t think Danny Garcia thought I’d come out fighting like that,” Herrera said after the fight. “I want the rematch if he’ll stay at 140. I’m hard to hit. They think I’m easy until they get in the ring with me.”

Danny is talking about moving up in weight to possibly fight Amir Khan, if Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer asks him to do that, or stay at 140. Herrera is likely not someone who is high on Garcia’s list in terms of who he wants to fight next. It goes without saying that this wasn’t supposed to be a competitive fight like this. Herrera was someone that was brought in to keep Garcia busy, and to make it an entertaining fight for Garcia to shine in front of the Puerto Rican fans. But Herrera flipped the script by outsmarting Garcia, and pushing the fight against him.

What we found out is that Garcia doesn’t fight well when a lot of pressure is put on him and when he’s not holding like he did in the Lucas Matthysse fight. Garcia did a lot of holding against Herrera, but not nearly as much as he did in the Matthysse fight. By not holding as much, we saw how limited Garcia is as a fighter. He’s not a good inside fighter, as Herrera showed us. Garcia also showed that he’s dirty at times with his low blows and rabbit punches.

Fans obviously want to see a Garcia-Herrera rematch, but they’re probably not going to get their wish. Fans wanted to see a Garcia-Matthysse rematch, and they didn’t get to see that. Fans wanted to see a Khan-Garcia fight, and that didn’t happen either. In other words, Herrera had his chance against Garcia and the judges decided that he didn’t do enough to get the win. Now Garcia will move on. I just hope that he looks better in his next fight because he looked like limited fighter against Herrera, and not nearly as good as what many people thought he was going into the fight.
