Hearn: Burns asked for a rematch with Crawford

hearn65By Scott Gilfoid: With the way that Ricky Burns (36-3-1, 11 KO’s) was whipped last Saturday night by the unbeaten talent Terence Crawford (23-0, 16 KO’s) in losing his WBO lightweight title in their Glasgow, Scotland based fight, you would think that Burns shouldn’t get any closer than 4 thousand miles so that he could never suffer another one-sided loss to him again. But Burns doesn’t care that he was beaten up and dominated in losing a 12 round unanimous decision.

Burns says he wants to fight Crawford again if his promoter Eddie Hearn can set up the fight for him, which I doubt he can.

“Ricky didn’t make him work as hard as he should have done,” Hearn said to IFL TV. “It’s different when you’re going against a guy that is switch-hitting with that much skill and you’re getting tagged every time you try stuff. The [Raymundo] Beltran fight is still out there, and that’s a big fight. Burns said to me after the fight ‘what did you think?’ ‘You lost the fight,’ [Hearn said]. ‘Give me a rematch.'”

Honesty, Burns has had a good run in winning two world titles, but I think his time is over with. A rematch between him and Crawford won’t be any different than it was before. I mean, Crawford isn’t going to all of a sudden lose his talent and become beatable to a fighter like Burns. And Burns isn’t going to fight the way he did when he was in his mid-20s. Sure, Hearn can set up a rematch between Burns and Crawford, but it would be stupid. Burns would end up getting dominated again, and he’s lose more value.

You saw how Burns’ Scottish fans were frozen after the fight last night, not saying a word. There was hardly any talking at all, as they stood in mass just staring at Burns with their mouths open, but not saying anything. It must have been a crushing blow for Burns’ fans to see him get whipped like that. The thing is the fans were standing like that before the the judges scores were announced. They knew that Burns had lost the fight badly, so it really didn’t matter that the judges hadn’t given the scores yet, because as far as the fans were concerned, he had already lost the fight in their minds. So with that reaction from his fans, does Burns really want to put his Scottish fans through another disappointment again by facing Crawford for a second time and getting whipped just as badly if not worse.

Hearn was talking about wanting to put Burns back in the ring with Beltran for a rematch that would take place in Scotland. However, I think that would be a big mistake because in many ways, Beltran is an even tougher opponent than Crawford is. Heck, if they put Burns back in with Beltran in a rematch, I could see Burns suffering another broken jaw and end up losing another massive amount of time while he’s busy licking his wounds in slowly healing up.
