By Bradley Dee: From bell one last Saturday night in his fight against former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) in Las Vegas, Nevada, it was apparent to me that Alfredo Angulo (22-4, 18 KO’s) is a shot fighter and has nothing left. The two wars with Erislandy Lara and James Kirkland have finished Angulo, and I see no reason why he shouldn’t retire immediately, or risk brain injuries.
As for the stoppage last Saturday night, it was completely justified and Angulo took a heavy beating in this fight while it lasted. Right from the go, I noticed that Angulo had pitty pat punches, no energy, and had zero power. The fight was halted in the 10th round by referee Tony Weeks after Angulo was hit by a left uppercut by Canelo. Angulo was still on his feet at the time of the stoppage.
No one wants to see another Magomed Abdusalamov happen, so the stoppage was justified. Angulo was too far behind for a points win, had no power to knockout Alvarez, and wasn’t hurting him with anything.
I don’t see the point in Angulo further risking his health if he cannot compete at the world level anymore and he cannot. Can he beat B and C level fighters? Maybe, but is it worth it?
In closing, the thing that really irritated me about this fight was his corner insisting that they would stop the fight if another bad round happened, then when it was happening, and the referee stopped the fight, not backing him was hypocritical and unjustified.
Live to LIVE another day Alfredo, not fight. It is over.
