Deontay: Malik Scott said it was my left hook that stopped him

deontay645By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight Deontay Wilder (31-0, 31 KO’s) cleared up the confusion about which of his two powerful shots that did the job in knocking out Malik Scott (36-2-1, 13 KO’s) in the 1st round last Saturday night at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Deontay said that Scott told him it was his left hook that put him on the canvas in the 1st round.

With the way that Deontay nailed Scott, it was hard to tell which of his punches planted the 33-year-old Scott for the 10 count.

“I spoke to Malik Scott and he said it was my left hook that did it,” Deontay said. “He’ll do great things, though.”

That’s Deontay for you. He’s pure class with the way he shows respect for his beaten foes. It was a relief to here Deontay saying nice things about his opponents instead of dumping on the poor guy in the low point in his career. Getting knocked out in the 1st round is not a good thing for a fighter’s career. Scott had been previously knocked out in the 6th round last year in July by Britain’s Dereck Chisora in the infamous 9-count fight, but that was from a punch to the back of the head rather than a perfectly placed left hook to the right cheek that Deontay landed.

Also, that was a fight that was halted on the 9 count rather than the full 10 count. Deontay’s knockout of Scott left no doubts who the winner of the fight was. There was no controversy other than which of his two punches did the damage. It was pretty obvious to me from watching replays of the fight that it was Deontay’s left hook that did it, because the right hand he threw only partially got through his gloves. It obviously couldn’t have been that one that did that to Scott.

Being that was a WBC eliminator, Deontay can now sit back and wait until the results of the May 10th fight between Bermane Stiverne and Chris Arreola before he starts getting ready for his title shot against the winner of that fight later on this year. Believe me, that’s going to be a huge, huge fight and I can see that being a headliner fight.

Deontay’s knockout of Scott definitely stole the show from the dull main event fight between Danny Garcia and Mauricio Herrera. That fight was a huge letdown, especially given how the wrong guy was given the win. Deontay brought his own judges with him in the form of his two fists last night, so there wasn’t going to be any controversy as far as his fight went.
