Chad Dawson signs with Al Haymon

dawson2By Allan Fox: In a move that is probably 2 fights too late, former WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (31-3, 17 KO’s) has signed with adviser Al Haymon to help manage his sagging career. Dawson, 31, has lost his last two fights both by knockout to Andre Ward and Adonis Stevenson. He’s not looked good in the ring in quite a while, even before his losses to those two fighters.

At one time, Dawson was considered to be the best fighter at 175, but he failed to do much with his career other than fight a lot of older guys like Glen Johnson, Antonio Tarver and Bernard Hopkins.

Dawson might be back in the ring by May, according to RingTV to fight a still to be determined opponent. It’s probably realistic to conclude that Dawson can’t compete with Stevenson and Sergey Kovalev. However, if Haymon can position him to fight for the IBF 175 lb title against the winner of the Bernard Hopkins vs. Beibut Shumenov fight, Dawson might have a chance at beating one of those guys. It’s doubtful that either of those guys would give Dawson a title shot straightaway given his two recent knockout losses. Dawson doesn’t bring much in terms of fan interest, so that’s another reason why he would likely be ignored.

Dawson doesn’t have the build to move up to the cruiserweight division to try and salvage his career at that weight. He’s also too tall and skinny to move down in weight to the super middleweight division to try and do something at that weight. Dawson is pretty much stuck at 175. Haymon will probably realize that Dawson only has two options if he’s to be successful and that’s to go after the IBF or WBA title held by Hopkins and Shumenov. That title will be unified by next month when Hopkins and Shumenov face each other on April 19th, unless they fight to a 12 round draw.
