Can’t Adrien Broner do better than Carlos Molina for May 3rd?

broner8583By Scott Gilfoid: Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be having Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) and Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) both on his May 3rd fight card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, but unfortunately both of them appear headed for disappointing fights that make it hardly worth having them on his career. Broner is said to be fighting Carlos Molina (17-1-1, 7 KO’s), and we’re talking the light welterweight version of Carlos Molina, not the IBF junior middleweight champion.

Khan’s opponent on the card is still being worked out, but Luis Collazo is the guy that Golden Boy Promotions are reportedly interested in matching against him. However, Collazo is a far more appealing opponent than Molina is for Broner. Molina hasn’t fought in over a year since his 10th round stoppage loss to Khan in 2012.

That was Molina’s big step up fight and he failed miserably. With Molina coming off of a long layoff and a knockout loss to Khan, it’s difficult to understand why he’s being put in with Broner. Molina will obviously lose to Broner, but it’s a fight where Broner is going to be out in a situation where he’ll need to totally dominate Molina and take him out before the 10th round in order to get any credit for the win.

If Molina is able to go the distance with Broner, and maybe make him struggle to get the victory, it’s going to cause Broner’s stock to drop off even more so than it did with his 12 round decision loss to Marcos Maidana last December.

With Broner moving down in weight to the 140lb division, he should at least be matched up against someone like Mauricio Herrera, Ajose Olusegun, Humberto Soto, Dierry Jean, Selcuk Aydin, Zab Judah, Karim Mayfield, Hank Lundy, Lamont Peterson, Anthony Peterson or Viktor Postal. I mean, if Broner can’t beat these guys than he really needs to not waste the time of fans and Golden Boy and move back down to the lightweight division.

If he cut the mustard against guys in this class than what the heck is he going to do when Golden Boy eventually puts him in with those type of fighters? Why wait? It’s a lot better for Golden Boy to get it over with and find out now whether Broner has the talent or not to beat these guys, because fighting little Carlos Molina is a total waste of time for Broner and for the boxing fans.

Broner sees himself as the future of boxing, but what future? If he’s going to be matched up against guys like Molina, does that mean a future where Broner will be carefully matched against weak opponents?

Some fans feel that Broner deserves an easy fight against Molina after the beating he took against Maidana last December. I don’t feel that way. A win over Molina isn’t going to change Broner’s reality any. He’ll still be just as much overmatched against a guy like him than he was before. He might as well face the best and then move back down to the lightweight division after he gets exposed again.
