Canelo makes 168 lb re-hydration limit at today’s weigh-in

By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez successfully made weight today in his secondary weigh-in for his fight tonight against Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s), but Golden Boy Promotions isn’t saying how much Canelo weighed. Canelo had to make the agreed upon re-hydration limit of 168 lbs or else he’d have had to fork over some more green stuff to Angulo. Canelo already gave Angulo $100,000 of his purse for asking that the weight limit be raise from 154 to 155 to make it easier for himself to make weight.

***News update: “I was told by a GB official that Canelo was 166 at his 3 pm weight check,” Rafael said.

As Dan Rafael of ESPN reports, today’s secondary weigh-in wasn’t open to the public, so we have to depend on Canelo’s promoters at Golden Boy to verify that Canelo made the 168 lb weight at 3 pm PT.

Hopefully, Showtime will get Canelo and Angulo to step on a scale while they’re on their way to the ring tonight, because some fans would like to know how much they weighed. If Canelo comes into the fight at 180, I think it would interest fans. The same for Angulo. It’s always nice to know what the weight difference is between two competitors for a fight, especially when one of them has asked that the weight limit be increased to accommodate them.

I think the sanctioning bodies need to create a rule to where secondary weigh-ins should be like normal weigh-ins where the public can see the two fighters weigh-in, because I think they’re just as important as a regular weigh-in. The fans need to be in on this and there should be close ups of the scales to make sure everything is balancing out right. Having cameras from a mile away on the scales kind of defeats the purpose, because you might not be able to see something suspicious going on.
