Tyson Fury takes easy fight against Joey Abell on February 15

fury11`1By Scott Gilfoid: Britain’s Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) won’t be fighting 39-year-old little known fighter Gonzalo Omar Basile on February 15th. That’s the good news. That news is that Fury will be fighting Joey Abell (29-7, 28 KO’s) instead on the same date at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. What we have here is a basic swap of a one easy mark for another. I wish I could say that Abell is an upgrade from Fury’s previous opponent Basile, but I can’t. This is like a straight even swap of one 2nd tier fighter for another.

Abell is supposed to be someone that will get the 6’9″ Fury ready for his needless rematch against Dereck Chisora in June. I won’t bother going into why I see the Fury-Chisora fight as being one that makes absolutely not sense at all, because it would take the entire article for me to list my reasons. Suffice it to say, I think it’s a rediculous fight for Fury. It’s like asking Deontay Wilder go back and re-fight Audley Harrison, Nicolai Firtha, and Siarhei Liakhovich just because some fans are interested in seeing if Deontay can beat them all again. Why go backwards with your career?

Fury has everything to lose and nothing to gain by fighting someone like Abell. For one, no one will care if he knocks this guy out, because Abell was already defeated by Kubrat Pulev, Chris Arreola, Fres Oquendo and a whole bunch of other fighters that I’m sure the boxing public has never heard of before. Believe me, if I’ve never heard of them before then I’m pretty sure no one else has either. The fact is that Abell has been beaten by guys that aren’t even on the map, and now Fury is picking him out to get an easy win. Now just imagine how Fury will look if Abell connects with one of his home run punches on Fury’s chin and knocks him flat like some other heavyweights have done to him in the past.

Abell hits hard enough to where Fury won’t be able to get up for a long, long time if he hits him right. If Fury gets starched by Abell, then he can forget about fighting Wladimir Klitschko in the near future. That definitely won’t happen. Yeah, I guess Fury can still do the Dereck Chisora fight, but the thought of that being a heavyweight eliminator bout will be down the drain, because there’s no way any of the sanctioning bodies will let Fury fight in an eliminator with him coming off of a knockout loss to Abell. Heck, they might as well have Abell fight in an eliminator instead of Fury if he’s able to whip him.
