The Kell Brook problem

By Daven: Having watched welterweight contender Kell Brook fight many times on Sky Sports one can clearly see the guy is special. (no pun intended) However his fan base is mainly comprised of people from Sheffield and hardcore boxing fans within Britain. This basically means he is no position to call out Amir Khan; a man synonymous with British boxing whether you like him or not.

In contrast Amir Khan has a had a fanatic following since his success at the 2004 Olympic games. After winning the Silver medal, promoter Frank Warren did a superb job in garnering the teen prodigy great fame and attention. Within a short space of time Amir became World Lightweight champion and even a defeat to the unknown Prescott did not prevent his meteoric rise in the eyes of his legions of fans. Evidence of this is the fact he was getting talked about all over the internet, all over the country and constantly appeared on television whether it was Sky sports news or ITV news.

Kell never had the luxury of fighting at an Olympic games so naturally his professional career has been harder in the sense he has had to work his way up by fighting in front of small audiences for little reward. Eddie Hearn though over the past two years has really taken the gritty Yorkshireman under his wing and consolidated Brook’s appeal by having him make regular media appearances. The Brook-Khan showdown on Ringside in 2012 stands out as being Kell’s finest hour in regards to obtaining mass exposure and intrigue from casual boxing fans.

Nevertheless a fight between the pair will  not take place in 2014 due to the fact Kell has to widen his support; if he does this the fight with Khan will result in both fighters being compensated handsomely instead of Just Amir and consequently the fight will be five times bigger than it would be if fought this summer or winter.

Brook is fighting in Liverpool on March 15th in a tune up fight which makes me worry as it is a needless fight considering he is already mandatory for Porter’s belt; by having a fight only three or four months before Porter could potentially cause a recurrence of last year’s injury. Moreover does having a so called tune up fight so shortly before his maiden world title fight signify he is extremely nervous about fighting Porter? For me it does especially considering last year’s disappointment. I just hope he doesn’t over work!

Having said that a fit Kell Brook can indeed win a world title this summer against Porter as the Sheffield lad is physically superior to gun shy Shawn. I predict that Kell would really rattle Porter early on and potentially stop the slickster well inside the distance. Lastly by defeating Porter Kell will convey to the American market that he is the “real deal” and consequently he would be in demand to fight over in the States more frequently against top level opposition from Golden boy as well Top Rank such as Alexander, Bradley, Ruslan, Garcia, Broner and maybe even Pacquiao or Floyd in 2015.
