Special K needs a big name

brook764By jochef: I will start this article by saying I am a big fan of Kell Brook. He has all the tools to become a real force in the welterweight division, and his accurate punches and slick movement have at times left his opponents bewildered and completely out of ideas. However, his opponents have been largely limited in their ability and at this stage in his career. Should he have more names on his record?

I feel like his promoter Eddie Hearn has kept him quite safe and has now got himself to the stage where he is mandatory to the IBF title. He may lack the experience needed to go to an opponents back yard and bring home a title. This brings me to the point that Kell has had more final eliminators, warm ups and stay busy fights than I care to remember, and when you look back through his record, will fights against Matthew Hatton, Hector Saldivia, Carson Jones and even Venyslav Senchenko be enough to help him when he is under the spotlight in America?

If I were his promoter (and I am  not for one second saying I would do a better job than Match room), I would have had him tested by such names as Paulie Malignaggi, Shane Mosley and Victor Ortiz. These are names that would have made him more credible in the United States and would give us more of an idea of the level he is at and if he really can mix it at world level.

He is in my opinion far better than all those at this stage in their careers, and I also think he is better than the champion he will be facing this Summer, Shawn Porter who proved he is strong, durable and can stick to a game plan. Fully fit, focused and in front of his thousands of adoring fans Brook can be a match for anyone but we will just have to see if he is as special as we think he is and if Britain is heading toward having another World Champion.
