mora1By Allan Fox: Former WBC light middleweight champion Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora (25-3-2, 8 KO’s) has a chance of facing WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (30-0, 22 KO’s) next, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN and Steve Kim. Quillin, 30, needs a well known opponent for his next title defense, and the #10 WBA Mora definitely serves that purpose given his vast experience during his 14-year pro career.

Quillin is coming off of a 10th round stoppage win over challenger Gabriel Rosado last October in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The fight was halted due to a cut that Rosado had suffered. However, Rosado was really taking the fight to Quillin at the time of the stoppage, and he had shaken Quillin up in the 9th round with some big shots. Quillin looked frightened in the 9th and the 10th rounds from the pressure that Rosado was putting on him, and from the occasional big shots he was getting nailed with in the fight.

“Sergio Mora says he’s in the running to face Peter Quillin next,” Kim said on his social media site. “Latin Snake really wants that fight #boxing.”

Mora held the WBC 154 lb title from June of 2008 to September of 2008. Mora beat an out of shape Vernon Forrest by a 12 round decision to capture his title. However, three months later an in shape Forrest was able to avenge his loss by defeating Mora by a 12 round unanimous decision. In 2010, Mora was robbed in a fight against Shane Mosley in which was scored a 10 round draw. In 2011 and 2012, Mora lost a pair of decisions [10 and 12 round] to Brian Vera in close fights. In Mora’s last two fights, he’s looked sharp in defeating Gregorz Proksa and Milton Nunez.

Quillin has twice defended his World Boxing Organization title in defeating Fernando Guerrero and Rosado both by stoppages. However, Quillin has received a ton of criticism for failing to take on WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in a unification fight that Golovkin and his promotional team badly want.
