No bias: Truth about Mayweather vs. Maidana or Khan

mayweather434By Wil Patino – Welcome Boxing Fans: Hardcore, casual, and everything in between. Here to give an UNBIASED account of Floyd Mayweather Jr’s purposed selection of opponents between Amir Khan and Marcos Maidana. Here is a small breakdown on what I believe COULD happen in either fight, and the chances each fighter has against Mayweather Jr. So let me begin in alphabetical order with Amir Khan.

Amir “King” Khan:  Amir Khan is a somewhat interesting opponent for Floyd due to his blazing fast hands and something we don’t speak of too often – his heart. Amir does possess a threat in speed and combination punching. His biggest criticism is his “glass” chin. I will not rush into saying he flats out has a glass chin, although I am very tempted in doing so. We must remember he has taken big shots against fighters like Peterson, Breidis Prescott, Maidana, and Garcia. In 2 of those 4 fights i mentioned he was knocked out, and in the other 2 he was able to take the shots and survive. So one thing I will agree on with most on this site is Khan doesn’t have a great chin, thats for sure. With that being said I believe Khan would give Mayweather some trouble in the first 2-3 rounds. Mosley was able to do so in the first 2 rds himself, but Mosley was very tight and didn’t seem very relaxed pretty much through out the fight. That is something I feel Khan will not show, I believe he will be relaxed for the most part as he usually is. He’s a bit stubborn and that might actually help him out for a few rounds as he will take some risks i believe many fighters are not willing to take against Floyd early ( Canelo never seemed to take those risks in Floyd’s last outing).

So to get to the point I think Khan might surprise Floyd a little something when he starts throwing quick combinations, in which Floyd would defend using head movement, rolling the shoulder, catching punches with his glove, and waist movement too. He will elude most of those shots as he usually does, but i believe some will penetrate grazing his temple and even land a bit  clean. Amir has a good reach, wide shoulders and most importantly speed. It is safe to assume he will land a bit. Floyd would do his usual, time Amir and counter, but what might surprise Floyd will be Amirs’ ability to take his punch. I think Amir can take a little punishment from Floyd who doesn’t like to fully commit on his punches like the punchers who have hurt Khan in the past. Don’t be surprise if Khan creates a cut on Floyd’s face in this fight, nothing severe but the speed can cause a cut somewhere… Khan might even stun Floyd with a shot eventually in the fight, but I believe if anything of that magnitude were to happen it’ll happen within the first 5 rounds. Even with all that being said, I believe Floyd will drop Khan with a flash knock down. Khan will show heart, but Floyds adjustments will come into play thus taking over the fight and dominating in the middle to last rounds, where Khan might be able to win 1 rd during the latter stages of the fight, but it will be Floyd winning most likely 9 of 12 rds (plus the knock down) in a fight nearly as exciting as Cotto vs Mayweather.

Marcos “El Chino” Maidana: Maidana in my opinion doesn’t really possess much of a threat in this bout. His biggest threat is his power, but without much of it being able to land on a speedy defensive wizard in Mayweather Jr. I just don’t see the Argentinian champ have much of a shot here. Not to discredit Marcos Maidana as a fighter, because he is a very good strong fighter with sheer determination and a relentless spirit in search of always trying to hurt his opponent. Yet we have seen lesser “boxers” out box him and use a lot of holding and movement to avoid Maidana’s power. Something Broner didn’t do much of in his defeat to El Chino.

So Here is what I think would happen, I actually believe with Robert Garcia in his corner he (Maidana) will try to use some of his new found jab early. It will be more of a range finder than anything else really. Floyd might begin a little cautious reading his opponent. Maidana will start getting jabbed which will start getting El Chino to resort to what he knows best in a hurry. I think he will throw some wide punches and get countered, Floyd would move around laterally where he might begin to frustrate Maidana early. Floyd will out box Maidana in the first couple rounds, now here comes the only interesting part of this fight. Eventually Maidana will rush in and take some punches from Floyd on the way in where Marcos will land a decent body shot or 2. He will begin throwing those wild over hand rights and i believe surprisingly enough a handful of overhands might land. Now the damage that will be behind those punches, not sure will be enough to get much of Floyd’s attention. Other than that Floyd will pitch a shutout with Maidana maybe winning a mercy round. So not much excitement in this one folks.

In closing this article, I would like to state that this is my humble opinion in which i tried to completely use my mind and not my heart in writing this . Let me know if you believe this is a fair assessment of what you believe would happen.  I’ll leave by saying I’m not really excited about either match and don’t plan on paying to watch them, but i understand the fans who do although i may not agree with them. lets discuss and dispute… in other words let’s ready for the fight! ( verbally that is )
