Mayweather will choose Khan rather than Maidana, because it’s the easier fight, says Sanchez

khan5434By Scott Gilfoid: Trainer Abel Sanchez, who has no dog in this hunt, sees Floyd Mayweather Jr. selecting Amir Khan to fight on May 3rd rather than Marcos Maidana. To Sanchez, Khan is the softer target, and he feels that Mayweather will want an easy fight against Khan rather than a potentially hard one against the aggressive and hard-hitting Maidana.

What’s interesting is that in a poll of writers on RingTV, a good deal of them feel that Mayweather will wind up fighting Khan anyway, even if Maidana is the one that wins the poll vote.

I’m not sure how they would explain why Khan is still getting the fight given that Maidana won the poll. I think it’ll look really bad if Khan gets the fight, but loses the vote. With voting processes, you just don’t know whether things are rigged or not.

I know if I see Maidana’s huge lead over Khan disappear overnight, I’ll be totally suspicious and feel that the whole voting thing was just a gimmick. I hope it’s not, because this is a great way for Mayweather to select his next fight.

“I believe that Floyd Mayweather will choose Amir Khan, because that’s an easier fight for Floyd than Marcos Maidana,” Sanchez said RingTV. As a fan, I would like to see Floyd versus Maidana. With Khan, it will take him two or three rounds to figure Khan out, and then, Floyd’s going to start spanking him and then it’s going to be an easy fight for Floyd, even with his hand speed.”

I believe Mayweather will choose Khan as well. Khan’s an easy mark, and kind of similar to Victor Ortiz. He’ll be able to sell the fight with his constant self-promoting, but once he’s in the ring, he’ll fold up in 2-3 rounds. Fans will of course feel angry and upset, at least the fans who were expecting a competitive fight. The fans who look at the fight in the proper way by seeing it as a mismatch and more of a business decision, they’ll not be surprised at all when Khan bites the dust early in the fight.

I just hope that Golden Boy Promotions at least stacks the undercard with some decent fights, because the card will need something to interest fans. If all you have is the Mayweather-Khan fight and a bunch of mismatches, then it won’t be worth it to see the fight card. Golden Boy needs to put someone like Deontay Wilder on the card to make it an interesting fight card.
