(Photo, Courtesy Sumio Yamada/Christian Kuechl) By Scott Gilfoid: Matthew Macklin, one of the former knockout victims of WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (28-0, 25 KO’s), is giving his opponent for tonight Osumanu Adama (22-3, 16 KO’s) next to no chance of beating Golovkin when the two meet each other tonight at the Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco. Macklin was blasted out in 3 rounds by Golovkin last year in getting stopped with a body shot last June.
Macklin thinks that the only chance that Adama has to win the fight is if he goes right after Golovkin and tries to turn it into a war rather than trying to survive by boxing him. In fact, Macklin feels that the last thing that Adama wants to do is go in there and try to box Golovkin. Macklin thinks this would be a mistake due to Golovkin’s superior boxing skills.
“Unless you’re a middleweight Guillermo Rigondeaux – and from what I’ve seen Adama isn’t – the worst possible thing you could do against Golvokin would be to try to outbox him,” Macklin said via Fightnews. “He’s [Golovkin] got a very good jab and his footwork is is far too good.”
Let’s be honest about this fight; it’s a mismatch straight up with Adama being pooled from near the bottom of the top 15, so what do you expect to get when you’re scrapping the lower levels of the top 15 to get an opponent. Adama doesn’t have a chance not because Golovkin is so great; Adama doesn’t have a chance because he’s a mediocre fighter who was previously beaten soundly by Daniel Geale. For me, that’s enough to know that tonight’s fight is going to be a mismatch. If a less than impressive former champion like Geale was able to dominate Adama in winning a lopsided 12 round decision over him 2 years ago, then that’s enough for me to know that Adama has no chance at all. We’re talking zero chance.
Macklin was flapping his gums about how Adama might have a chance to beat Golovkin if he comes inside with him, because Macklin feels that Golovkin isn’t a great inside fighter, even though he knocked him out on the inside. But Adama isn’t going to beat a talent like Golovkin by coming straight at him. If he follows Macklin’s brilliant advice, he’ll probably get knocked out in the 1st round. If that’s the best that Macklin can come up with then I hope he never becomes a trainer, because I could see his fighters getting whipped left and right with him giving them pearls of wisdom to go right after their stronger and more talented opponents.
“I think he’d [Golovkin] be far too much for Carl Froch, who likes to fight at mid and long range himself,” Macklin said.
I totally agree with what Macklin says here. I do believe that Golovkin would destroy Froch and take him to school before knocking him out cold. I sure hope Golovkin chooses to fight Froch before someone else like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. or George Groves beats him first. If Froch gets beaten again, then there won’t be any point in Golovkin ever moving up in weight to fight him.
