Khan yaps about Mayweather wanting an easy fight against Maidana

By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it didn’t take Amir Khan (28-3, 18 KO’s) long to come out of the woodwork and start yapping about why he thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) is leaning in direction of fighting the killer slugger WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) on May 3rd instead of himself. Khan has Mayweather’s motives worked to be a case of him looking for an easy opponent to knockout in his next.

It’s kind of interesting because Khan seems to have everything backwards in his thinking. Maidana is the exact opposite of a fighter who is easy to knockout. In fact, Maidana has never been knocked out during his career, although he has been dropped on a number of occasions. Khan is the one that Mayweather would want to fight if he were looking for an easy knockout to impress the boxing fans on Showtime pay-per-view.

Khan said on his twitter today: “Mayweather says he needs a easy fight and fans want to see a knock out so maybe that’s the reason he doesn’t want fight me and wants Maidana?”

No, that’s not the reason why Mayweather doesn’t want to fight you, Khan. Mayweather doesn’t want to rush into a fight with you until the fans have spoken by voting – or not voting you – in. The reality is that Maidana is fighting well right now, and you’re not. I really hate to say it, but you came up short of the mark in your fights against the talented Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson. Now it looks like you’re about to get weeded out by the fans in Floyd’s poll on his website. Don’t worry; it’s very democratic.

According to sportnews24, Mayweather was thinking of taking the fight with Khan, but the overwhelming negative amount of feedback he’s received from fans has put him off the thought of taking the fight with. As such, instead being mean to Khan and crushing his hopes himself, Mayweather has been given Khan a huge break by leaving it up to the fans to select his next opponent. If the fight fans believe that Khan deserves the fight, then he’ll get voted in by a democratic process. But if the fans see Khan as a over-the-hill pretender or someone not deserving of a title fight, then they’ll vote Maidana in as the guy that Mayweather should fight.

As far as Maidana being an easy mark for Mayweather to knockout, Khan is way off base with that opinion. Maidana is as tough as they get, and he’s not going to drop for the 10 count the first time he gets hit solid by Mayweather. I suspect that Maidana will be there for the full 12 rounds, and he’ll give Mayweather some problems due to his huge power, and his aggressive fighting style.

I particularly like the Mayweather-Maidana fight because it’ll give boxing fans the chance to see the real difference between Mayweather and Adrien Broner. Maidana just finished beating the Mayweather-like Broner last December, and Broner is kind of a copy of Mayweather in terms of his fighting style. He’s obviously not a good copy, but he’s definitely a copy of Mayweather none the less. I want to see what the real Mayweather can do against Maidana, because we already saw what the Mayweather copycat Broner was able to do against him, and he looked terrible.
