Khan: Mayweather Jr. can’t out-box me

khan534By Chris Williams: Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) believes that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) will lose for the first time if he chooses to give him the fight on May 3rd. Khan won’t try and slug with Mayweather like he did in the past in his losses to Breidis Prescott, Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia. Khan instead says he’ll use his feet and his hand speed to out-box Mayweather, and get the better of him in every area, according to the sweetscience.com.

As far as Mayweather’s poll goes, Khan says that the fans have spoken and that they want him to be the one that fights Mayweather. Khan said that the other independent polls that didn’t require users to log in with their twitter or Facebook accounts were polls were casual boxing fans voted. Khan believes that the hardcore fans selected him from the Mayweather poll.

“No fighter can out-box me,” Khan said to sweetscience. “Floyd won’t do it either. I can’t see Floyd out-boxing me…he can never dictate a fight. I won’t let him control the fight. I beat him with footwork and speed. I can keep up with him in many departments…I’m not desperate. I’m just responding to the fans. I bring fans from the UK, Asia and the Muslim community.”

Khan is dreaming pretty badly if he thinks he’ll out-box Mayweather. He does have the skills to do that, and it’ll be too easy for Mayweather to figure out Khan’s style. If guys like Julio Diaz and Danny Garcia were able to easily figure out what Khan was doing in the ring, then you’d have to expect Mayweather to do the same. Khan needs to give Mayweather some credit here.

It seems like Khan feels that he’s already got Mayweather beat in his mind. If Khan really thinks he’s better than Mayweather then why bother fighting him? Khan felt the same way about Breidis Prescott after he was knocked out by him, and that’s one of the reasons why he didn’t fight him again. He felt he’d beat him no problem in the rematch. If Khan believes himself to be better than Mayweather then he can simply claim victory now and move onto opposition that he doesn’t think he can beat. But this we all know that one of the attractions in fighting Mayweather is the career payday his opponents get.

With Khan now having lost 2 out of his last 4 fights, he might not have too many more paydays left in the sport. When Golden Boy Promotions finally steps Khan up against a decent welterweight, Khan could lose again. Once he gets beaten again, it’s going to create the need for Golden Boy to back him up once again and put him in with 2 or 3 more weak opponents in hope that he can improve enough to compete with the best fighters at 147. That’s what Golden Boy just finished doing with Khan by matching him with Carlos Molina and Julio Diaz. They matched against non relevant opposition to get his confidence back and to help him improve so that he can match up against the better fighters. If Khan gets the Mayweather fight, he’ll probably lose badly, and Golden Boy can start the process of trying to build him back up again with more tune-ups.
