Kell Brook tells Khan that he can get rich fighting him

By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) might not get the fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 3rd, but he can get a nice payday fight against #1 IBF Kell Brook (31-0, 21 KO’s), or at least that’s what Brook is saying. Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn reportedly said that a Brook fight could mean a $5 million payday for Khan if he were to accept it. That’s probably four times the amount that Khan will be making if he faces one of Golden Boy Promotions fighters in April or May.

It makes a lot of sense for Khan to accept the offer from Brook to fight him next, especially given the high probability that Khan will get beaten in his next fight against one of the names – Adrien Broner, Lamont Peterson or Shawn Porter – that he’s interested in fighting him.

Hearn said this on his twitter today: “Remember essentially it’s public demand that makes fights happen – @SpecialKBrook v @AmirKingKhan make some noise for that one.”

I don’t see there being a high demand for a Khan-Brook fight right now, but that doesn’t mean that it wouldn’t be a successful fight in the UK. It’ll do well, but it would do much better if Brook were to get a couple of solid wins under his belt beforehand. Brook doesn’t have the experience against quality opposition to make the Khan fight as big as it could be.

If Brook can stay healthy long enough to face and beat Shawn Porter, and then defend the title against quality opposition, then I see a Brook-Khan fight being huge. But you just don’t know what to expect with Brook, because he kept getting injured when he was scheduled to face Devon Alexander last year. Alexander moved on, and Brook resumed facing the poor opposition that he’s been fighting his entire career.

If Khan loses this next fight, the Brook needed worry about fighting him because the interest won’t be there in the UK in that fight. There would be some interest, but it would be a lot less than if they were to face each other right now.

Brook will be fighting next month on March 15th against an opponent still to be determined at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. It’s obviously going to be another weak opponent for Brook, because anytime you get this close a fight and the opponent still hasn’t been named, it means that it’s going to be a weak opponent.

The real problem with Brook is that he’s been fighting for 10 years and the best opposition he’s faced in all those years is Matthew Hatton, Vyacheslav Senchenko, Lovemore N’dou, and Carson Jones in all that time. In other words, he’s been fighting fringe level/2nd tier opposition. Brook probably would have gotten the Khan fight ages ago if he had started facing quality opposition 5-6 years ago instead of sticking with fodder all these years. I still don’t understand why Brook has wasted 10 years of his career fighting weak opposition. It’s such a waste. It’s like Brook has a failure to launch. Instead of progressing from the elementary opposition like most fighters do, Brook has remaining stuck fighting the same poor opposition year after year.

I’d like to see Brook face Keith Thurman and then Shawn Porter before getting a fight against Khan/ Brook needs to fight someone that’s actually relevant because it’s so tiresome seeing him fight worn out fighters or lesser 2nd tier guys.
