white787By Jim Dower: Unbeaten light heavyweight prospect Thomas Williams (16-0, 11 KO’s) made quick work in stopping Cornelius White (21-3, 16 KO’s) by a 1st round knockout on Friday night at the Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, Washington. Williams knocked White down twice in the round, and had him out on his feet in the corner when the referee stepped in and halted the fight at 2:49 of the 1st round.

The southpaw Williams dropped White with a left to the head at 29 seconds of the 1st round. However, while trying to finish him off, Williams was dropped from a hard left hook to the head from White. Shortly after the action resumed, Williams knocked White down with a short right hook to the head while backed up the corner. White was badly hurt after he staggered to his feet and surprisingly the referee let the fight continue.

Williams then pummeled White with a flurry of shots that caused the referee to halt the contest. White protested briefly at the stoppage, but he was clearly going to be knocked down again had the referee let the fight continue. As hurt as he was, White needed to grab Williams to try and buy some time, but he failed to do so.

Williams looks like a decent fighter for the 175 lb. division, but there was nothing in that performance that would suggest that he could compete against the likes of Adonis Stevenson or Sergey Kovalev. Williams is a good prospect, but he didn’t show the kind of talent that would enable him to ever compete against the best in the light heavyweight division.

Former WBA super bantamweight champion Rico Ramos (23-3, 12 KO’s) defeated an over-matched Jonathan Arrellano (14-3-2, 3 KO’s) by a 10 round unanimous decision. Ramos dropped Arrellano twice in the 5th and another time in the 6th from left hooks. What was peculiar about the fight was how Ramos failed to go after Arrellano after getting him hurt. Ramos fought like he was afraid to get hit, and he made what could have been an easy fight a lot harder than it should have been by failing to finish off Arrellano.

Super middleweight Ronald Hearns (26-5, 12 KO’s) tasted defeat at the hands of Eddie Hunter (10-9-2, 3 KO’s) in losing by a surprise 6th round stoppage.
