Victor Ortiz wants Mayweather rematch after Collazo fight

ortiz34By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) hasn’t even gotten past his opponent Luis Collazo (34-5, 17 KO’s), who he faces on Thursday night, and already Ortiz is talking about wanting a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Ortiz was stopped by Mayweather in the 4th round in September 2011, and the loss still doesn’t sit right with Ortiz due to the way he lost the fight.

Ortiz was halted when he dropped his guard in the 4th to try and hug Mayweather after Ortiz had lost a point for a head-butt. Mayweather decided to play dirty too, so he nailed Ortiz with a left-right combination while he was in the process of trying to hug him for the second time. Ortiz went down from the shots and was unable to get back to his feet in time to beat the count.

“It could have been respect if he [Mayweather] wouldn’t have beaten me the way that he did and instead taken the belt the way it was supposed to be taken,” Ortiz said via RingTV. “I would love to get a rematch with him. I deserve a rematch.”

It’s hard to say that Ortiz deserves a rematch considering that he was stopped in the 9th round in his last fight against Josesito Lopez, and that he’s been out of the ring for a year and a half. You could say that Ortiz deserved a rematch with Mayweather if he had beaten Lopez, and had returned to the ring as soon as his fractured jaw had healed. With the long layoff of a year and a half, and the defeat to Lopez, Ortiz probably needs 3 good solid wins under his belt before he can start talking about deserving a fight with Mayweather. Right now, you can’t say Ortiz deserves to fight any of the champions, because he’s quit in fights twice now. Ortiz needs to beat the likes Keith Thurman, Kell Brook, and Adrien Broner before he can start talking about wanting to fight Mayweather again.

The Ortiz-Collazo fight will be taking place at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York.
