Saul Alvarez v Alfredo Angulo: Random Thoughts

canelo665By Sevak Sarkisian: Not too long ago, it was announced that Jr. Middleweight contender Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1 30KO’s) will be making his return to the ring on March 8th against Alfredo Angulo (22-3 18KO’s). Initially when I heard the news I was somewhat disappointed because I felt like Golden Boy took the easy rout avoiding a fight with Carlos Molina for the IBF strap. However, when I started to think about the fight I realized that stylistically Angulo presents a tuff Match-up for Alvarez.

Angulo comes forward throwing punches in bunches and possesses a good chin. He also has above average power and he’s physically very strong. Those attributes don’t play into Canelo’s hands because he likes fighting at a slow pace. If he cant give Angulo something to think about while he marches forward Alvarez will have a long night ahead of him. He simply needs Angulo to respect his punching power.

As far as a match-up is concerned, I like this fight. I think it is an interesting fight and it will certainly be entertaining. However, after I had heard that this fight will in fact be a PPV, that’s when I started to feel a little disappointed about this fight. Saul Alvarez is a popular fighter especially amongst Mexican fans. However, his accomplishments are limited and he is coming off of an embarrassing loss. Alfredo Angulo on the other hand is coming off of a TKO loss. This will be the first time that I remember both fighters coming off bad losses headlining a PPV card. I disagree with the whole PPV concept because it helps destroy our sport. But since they exist it should only be reserved for the best of the best, not for two fighters coming off of horrible losses.
