Sanchez thinks Adrien Broner can come back from loss

broner660By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Abel Sanchez believes that former WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) can definitely turn his career around and come back from his defeat last month to Marcos Maidana. However, Sanchez thinks that Broner will need to move down in weight to 140 for him to have a chance of returning to form. He doesn’t believe that Broner is ready for the welterweight division right now at this point in his still early career.

“I think he can bounce back real good,” Sanchez said to Hustleboss. “I don’t think 147 is his weight. It may be in the future. I think it behooves him to get down to 140. I think Adrien had not had the difficult fights along the way to prepare him for Maidana…Broner has had a spoon-fed repertoire.”

This is unfortunately true about Broner having faced weak opposition during his career and not being properly prepared for a tough fighter like Maidana. Golden Boy Promotions should have brought Broner up against tougher opposition before having him pick up the WBA 147 lb. title against Paulie Malignaggi, who arguably was little more than a paper champion. Barely beating Malignaggi was a clear sign that Broner did not belong at 147, and that he was not ready to face the best fighters at 147. If he couldn’t even decisively beat a limited fighter like Malignaggi, then he didn’t belong a 147.

140 might not be such a great weight for Broner either. Sanchez seems to think it will be, but he also points out in the same interview that light welterweights like Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse and Lamont Peterson are tough fighters because they’ve been tested in the past.

Those guys could be every bit as difficult for Broner as Maidana was if Golden Boy goes that route with Broner. But it really doesn’t matter what Sanchez or anyone else is saying about Broner needing to move down in weight, because he apparently has no interested in doing so. In his New Years day tweet, Broner said he’s going to become a welterweight title again, which could mean that he’s going to stick it out at 147 regardless of what people are advising him to do.
