pac6734 (2)By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach thinks that one of Golden Boy Promotions fighters could cross over to Top Rank to take a fight against Manny Pacquiao if they’re unable to set up a fight between Pacquiao and Tim Bradley or Ruslan Provodnikov for April 12th.

The guy that Roach thinks could take the fight is WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia. He’s currently under contract with Golden Boy, and so it’s difficult to understand how he could fight Pacquiao without him getting out of his contract.

Speaking with Michael Woods of ESPN, Roach said “Someone will cross over” to fight Pacquiao from Golden Boy. Woods said that Danny Garcia is the name that Roach mentioned. It could also be one of Al Haymon’s fighters that presumably are promoted by Golden Boy.

At this point Pacquiao isn’t going to get a great opponent for his next fight unless Top Rank makes a move to select someone outside of their stable. Tim Bradley and Ruslan Provodnikov are not big fights for Pacquiao, and either one gets selected then you can expect the PPV numbers to be just as poor as they were for Pacquiao’s fight against Brandon Rios. Pacquiao needs to fight someone else in order to interest boxing fans, because Provodnikov and Bradley are more like regular HBO type fights and not PPV worthy opponents. Juan Manuel Marquez is a PPV worthy opponent, but he’s tired of fighting Pacquiao. He doesn’t like the idea of having to try and knock him out in order to be sure that he gets the win.

Bob Arum should have been thinking way ahead at the future when he saw that Marquez was aging and that he would soon no longer have anyone that he could put in with Pacquiao and get big PPV numbers. Anyone with their eyes open could have seen a long time ago that Rios, Mike Alvarado, Ruslan Provodnikov and Tim Bradley were not the direction for Arum to go in if he wanted to generate huge PPV buys in a Pacquiao fight. Arum needed to go after some other guys earlier in their careers in order to have someone that would be ready to step in and replace Marquez as the guy that fights Pacquiao in 4-5 rematches.
