peterson65676By Jim Dower: IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (32-2-1, 16 KO’s) won an easier than expected 12 round unanimous decision win over previously unbeaten #1 IBF challenger Dierry Jean (25-1, 17 KO’s) at the DC Armory, Washington, District of Columbia, USA. The final judges scores were 115-113, 116-112, 118-110. The 118-110 reflected what happened in the ring tonight.

The other two scores were way of the mark, because Jean was totally ineffective after the 3rd round of the fight, and just taking punishment to the body from the 4th to the 12th.

It was surprising to see how bad Jean looked in the fight, as he was one of Peterson’s worst opponents in a long time. Jean had built up an impressive record in facing weak opposition in Canada, and he just didn’t look ready at all for a fighter as skilled as Peterson was. This fight was a total domination by Peterson over a guy that didn’t belong in the same ring with him fighting for a world title.

It’s too bad that the International Boxing Federation didn’t make Jean fight someone good to earn his title shot, because he really needed to be weeded out before he got to this level. Jean wasn’t ready for a fighter at Peterson’s level. To earn his shot at a title fight against Peterson, Jean beat the following fighters in 2013: Cleotis Pendarvis and Juan Jesus Rivera. Neither guy are household names, and it just shows you how little Jean had to in order to get a title shot.

In the co-feature, junior middleweight contender Jermell Charlo (23-0, 11 KO’s) stayed unbeaten with a 10 round unanimous decision victory over Gabriel Rosado (21-7, 13 KO’s). The judges scored the fight 97-93, 99-91, 100-90. Charlo fought defensively the entire fight, making Rosado miss and hitting him back with shots. Charlo lacks power and he was forced to win by hitting and making the more powerful Rosado miss.

It was a decent performance from Charlo, but there was nothing there to suggest that he could be Erislandy Lara, Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Demtrius Andrade or Floyd Mayweather Jr. Those guys are clearly a level above Charlo, and I can’t see that changing in the future.
