The New Year starts with good news for fans of world class heavyweight boxing. 2004 Olympic gold medallist Odlanier Solis (20-1) will face Tony Thompson (38-4) on March 22nd in Turkey!

“All contracts are signed, the fight is on”, confirmed promoter Ahmet Oner who is planning to stage the fight in Kusadasi (Turkey). “Solis vs. Thompson is a great fight which I could actually do everywhere because it will gather lots of interest worldwide. I am very happy that all parties accepted and agreed. These are the fights we need to revive the heavyweight division.”

Both Thompson and Solis had their shots at the world championship against the Klitschko brothers. “La Sombra” lost to WBC champion Vitali Klitschko in March 2011 because of a knee injury. Thompson suffered two losses against younger brother and IBF, WBA and WBO titlist Wladimir Klitschko in July 2008 and July 2012. However, Thompson bounced back last year to upset British hope David Price twice to work his way to another world title eliminator which he lost on points to Kubrat Pulev in August 2013. Solis has won three in a row after recovering from his knee injury and managed to win the IBF intercontinental championship.

“This fight could go either way”, says Oner. “Of course, I believe in my fighter Odlanier Solis. I am still convinced that he will be heavyweight champion of the world. However, he has to beat guys like Thompson to get to the world title. I am pretty sure that the winner of this bout will get another shot at a title either later this year or in 2015 the latest.”
