My favourite British fights

By Dan Henderson: An article by fellow BN24 writer Olly Campbell caught my eye and it was regarding his top three fights in Britain in the last decade and it got me thinking about some of my favourite fights in Britain in the same period. I’m not criticizing Olly’s choices but I’d definitely have Ricky Hatton vs. Kostya Tszyu as my number 1 fight but of course it’s boxing so it’s about the variety of opinions which makes it such a great sport.

As Hatton vs. Tszyu is my number 1 that’d leave me to pick two of my own and at number two would be the epic night that was Carl Froch against Lucian Bute. I’m probably leaning towards this fight because I was lucky enough to be in attendance, as you may remember Froch was fresh from his super six final defeat at the hands of Andre Ward and you could say that it was a big fight to come back too especially as most fighters would have taken a ‘tune up’ first but the fight went a way no one expected it too.

Froch was the clear underdog going in to the fight against the unbeaten Bute who had been avoided by most of the big names in the division and he was supposed to dominate the Nottingham man but Froch had a different idea that evening and upset all the odds in what turned out to be one of the most one sided world title fights I had ever witnessed, he beat Bute for five rounds picking up an emphatic stoppage victory in the process.

The fight I’d put at the number three spot was a tough one to choose but I eventually decided to go back one extra year to October 2003 and we found ourselves in Edinburgh, Scotland in what was the first professional boxing card in twenty years to be held in the capital and of course the fight I’m referring to was between Scotland’s Alex Arthur and England’s Michael Gomez and what an absolute humdinger of a fight it was. Alex Arthur was the clear favourite against the battle hardened Gomez but Gomez upset the odds in a brutal fight in which he knocked his opponent down three times on route to a fifth round stoppage.

So those are my top three fights and I give Olly ultimate props for his previous post which led to me writing this.
