Mayweather: Pacquiao wants me to solve his problems

pac653By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. thinks Manny Pacquiao is looking at him as a lifeline to solve all of his problems that has hanging over his head in terms of his IRS issues, his diminishing pay-per-view problems, his problems with Juan Manuel Marquez and Tim Bradley. Mayweather says he’s not going to help solve Pacquiao problems for him. He feels he gave Pacquiao a chance to fight him on two occasions and Pacquiao chose not to take the fights for whatever reason. Now it’s on Pacquiao to handle them himself.

“Pacquiao missed his opportunity; he had his chance,” Mayweather said to Fighthype. “He felt like he was on the same level as me…he wouldn’t have asked for 50-50. So now, two losses later and he’s got a problem. When I offered you $40 million, you turned it down…So this guys got all these problems and he wants Floyd Mayweather to solve them for him…First he didn’t need me, now he needs me. Now you’re begging to get the fight.”

As Mayweather talked more and more one gets the sense that he will fight Pacquiao in the future, but he once again said that Bob Arum can’t be involved. It also sounds like Mayweather wants Pacquiao to grovel a little more in order to get the fight with him. If Pacquiao is okay with that, and he’s free and clear of Arum, he’ll probably get the fight once his contract with Arum is over with. But Pacquiao is going to have to let Mayweather know he’s the boss if he wants the fight, because the power has clearly shifted into Mayweather’s hands with Pacquiao’s two losses, his PPV numbers diminishing badly while Mayweather’s have gone up, and with Pacquiao needing to be matched against a pumped up former lightweight [Brandon Rios] in order to halt his 2-fight losing streak.

Pacquiao can definitely still get the Mayweather fight, but he’s going to need to be smart about it. If he stays with Arum at the end of his contract this year, then that’ll be it. Pacquiao will have made his choice and will have to be satisfied with him never getting the chance to fight Mayweather. Commonsense would tell you that Pacquiao should not renew with Arum, and that he should say and do whatever he has to in order to get the Mayweather fight. After all, Pacquiao’s a congressman and he should know how to smart and play the politician game to get what he wants done. But I have a feeling that Pacquiao will blow it and not get the Mayweather fight due to him re-signing with Arum. He would then be pretty much stuck fighting the guys in Arum’s stable until he retires.
