Jones Jr. wants Pascal to fight Froch next

froch332By Scott Gilfoid: Roy Jones Jr. believes that light heavyweight contender Jean Pascal (29-2-1, 17 KO’s) should look to fight IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (32-2, 23 KO’s) next, because he sees a rematch between them as a good fight due how competitive their previous bout was back in December 2008. Froch won that fight by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 116-112, 117-111, 118-110, but the fight was staged in Nottingham, UK.

It was a heck of a lot closer than those scores, and I almost had it a draw due to how each fighter dominated one half of the fight. Pascal got the better of Froch in the first 6 rounds, and Froch took over in the second part controlled the action against a tired Pascal.

“My personal preference would be for him [Pascal] to go back and fight Carl Froch,” Jones Jr. said to Hustleboss. “I think they had a really good fight the first time.”

I agree with Jones Jr. It’s about the best fight for both Pascal and Froch, because neither one of them seem so inclined to take the match-ups that the boxing public wants them to. Froch is dragging his feet about wanting to fight George Groves again, even though that’s the fight that the British public wants to see. Froch isn’t excited about fighting Andre Ward again either. As such, Froch might as well fight Pascal again if he can’t get a fight with former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

As for Pascal, he clearly isn’t up for fighting WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev or WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson. Those are the fights that the Canadian boxing fans and fans from elsewhere in the world wants to see Pascal fight. If you’ll notice, Pascal has gone out of his way not to mention either of those two fighters, and that gives you a pretty good idea about his thoughts about stepping in the ring with either of them. At least with fighting Froch, Pascal will get a good payday, and he’d have a chance to win if he doesn’t run out of gas like he did last time after only 6 rounds.

There’s one problem with fighting Froch though. He doesn’t want to move up in weight to fight at light heavyweight for anything. It doesn’t matter that Pascal is basically a super middleweight fighting at light heavyweight; Froch still doesn’t want to move up in weight even for one fight. I mean, it’s just 7 pounds that Froch would have to move up in order to fight someone he already beat, but I don’t think Froch would do it. I guess he’d rather be stuck between a rock and a hard place of having the Groves rematch staring him in the face and a rematch with Ward than he would in doing the smart thing and moving up in weight to fight Pascal again.
