Jeff Mayweather sees Floyd Jr. vs. Khan as a tough sell on Cinco de Mayo

khan1by Chris Williams: Jeff Mayweather, the uncle of Floyd Mayweather Jr., thinks that if Floyd Jr. faces Amir Khan on May 3rd, the Mexican Cinco de Mayo holiday, it’s going to make it tough to sell the fight on pay-per-view due to Khan being Pakistani instead of Mexican. Jeff thinks Mayweather will need to load up the undercard with good fighters that Mexican fans will be interested in seeing to make up for Khan not being able to pull his own weight in attracting fans.

Jeff believes that it might need a fight like the Adrien Broner vs. Marcos Maidana rematch to attract Mexican fans to purchase the fight. This begs the question that if the Mexican fans want to see Maidana, then why isn’t Mayweather fighting Maidana instead of Khan? Why doesn’t Golden Boy Promotions put Khan on the undercard against Adrien Broner while Maidana and Mayweather fight on the main event? Broner would probably say no to the Khan fight because he badly wants the Maidana rematch.

“Amir Khan is a good choice because he has a good following, so that helps a little bit in the pay-per-view,” Jeff said. “But that’s kind of tough to do a Pakistani on Cinco de Mayo, you know? For that to sell you got to add another set of veteran fighters on there or you’d have to stack the card with Maidana vs. Broner on the card as well.”

Jeff is right. It might take the Broner vs. Maidana II rematch for the card to bring in decent numbers, because there’s no way that a Mayweather-Khan fight will sell on the Cinco de Mayo holiday. I don’t know what Mayweather’s thinking in selecting Khan, but I think he’d making a huge mistake if thinks he’s going to attract Mexican fans to watch the fight on one of their biggest holidays.

It makes no sense at all. If Mayweather wants to fight Khan, he should just choose another date and select somebody else to fight. Even Maidana wouldn’t be good for the May 3rd date against Mayweather because he’s Argentinian and not Mexican. But at least Maidana would give Mayweather a chance to attract some of the Mexican fans. I don’t think Mayweather will be able to this with a Khan fight.

The problem that Golden Boy Promotions would have in trying to get Maidana to fight on Mayweather’s card against Broner is that Maidana says he doesn’t want to fight again until June because his girlfriend’s pregnant. To get Maidana in the ring earlier then that it’s going to take a lot of money to lure him back to fight Broner on May 3rd.
