Hearn wants to match Froch against Chavez Jr., Golovkin or Ward next

froch56267By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like George Groves (19-1, 15 KO’s) can pretty much forget about a rematch with IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (32-2, 23 KO’s), because his promoter Eddie Hearn says he’s trying to set Froch’s next fight up and he’s hoping to match him against one of the following fighters: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Gennady Golovkin or Andre Ward.

Yeah, Groves remains an option too, but my understand is he’s more of the last resort for Froch if he can’t get one of those bouts. Froch could fight Groves if Hearn isn’t able to nail down one of those bigger names for the aging soon to be 37-year-old Froch.

“We’re speaking to Dan Goosen about Andre Ward we are speaking to K2 Promotions about Gennady Golovkin and we are speaking to Bob Arum and Top Rank about Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.,” Hearn said to Sky Sports. “They’re all big fights and I know Carl has big ambitions to fight out in American in Las Vegas…I’ll be sitting down with Carl tomorrow and hopefully we can have some good news for the British public.”

Well there it is. Hearn is looking to match Froch against Chavez Jr., Ward, or Golovkin next. It looks like the only way Groves will get a rematch is if Hearn strikes out in his efforts to land one of those fighters. Depending on how Hearn goes about trying to put a fight together with one of them, he can definitely land one of them, but not if he tries to stick the fight in the UK. Those fighters are way too popular to agree to fight Froch in the UK.

Any chance of that happening when completely down the drain with Froch’s recent controversial stoppage win over Groves from last November. The last thing that Ward, Golovkin or Chavez Jr. needs is a referee jumping on them and putting them in a headlock and stopping the fight in the middle of an exchange. That’s what happened in the Froch-Groves fight last November. Groves was dominating the fight until the referee grabbed him in a headlock in the 9th round while the fight was still being contested.

I can just picture how bad it would look. If they felt that they could at least get rematches with Froch if they were jobbed, I could maybe see one of them agreeing to fight him. But with Froch’s track record in terms of rematches, I can’t see that happening. Froch never gave Andre Dirrell a rematch after beating him by a controversial decision in Nottingham, UK. Dirrell appeared to beat Froch by a lopsided 12 round decision, and yet he still found himself losing. And now it could be Groves’ turn with him getting ignored for a rematch while Froch moves on to fight someone else.
