golovkin454By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s promoters at K2 has already reserved Madison Square Garden in New York for Golovkin’s April 26th fight. Although they’re not saying who Golovkin will be facing on that date, it’s been talked about that he’ll be facing James Kirkland.

Kirkland vs. Golovkin is a good fight and might might be interesting if Kirkland tries to go toe-to-toe with Golovkin the way Kirkland fought Glen Tapia recently. Kirkland blew out Tapia in 6 rounds last December.

Golovkin has a tune-up type title defense next month against Osumanu Adama (22-3, 16 KO’s) on February 1st at the Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco. This fight doesn’t effect Golovkin’s April 26th date, as long as he doesn’t suffer a cut from a lucky punch or more likely a head-butt. K2 couldn’t find anyone of decent quality for Golovkin to fight, so they had to pick out #12 WBA, Adama for him to fight in order to stay busy. Adama was recently beaten easily by Daniel Geale in 2012, and that kind of gives you a good idea of what Golovkin is up against next month in facing Adama.

Golovkin will likely take a certain amount of criticism from hardcore boxing fans if he fights Kirkland, because he’s a junior middleweight and not a middleweight, and he was blown out in one round by one of Golovkin’s victims Nobuhiro Ishida in 2011. Kirkland has an excuse for that loss in that he was flabby and had fought only 2 easy tune-ups after being out of action from 2009-2011 due to him being incarcerated on a weapon’s violation. Kirkland is a lot better than he showed in his loss to Ishida. When he’s in shape he can be a very good fighter, and he might be able to give Golovkin some problems.
