Golovkin still wants Mayweather fight

golovkin5623By Chris Williams: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is still hoping that he can get a fight against the much lighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the near future. Golovkin sees this as his dream fight, and he thinks the boxing public would be really excited about watching the fight. Golovkin has almost run out of opposition at 160 that’s willing to fight him, and he’s now at the point where he’s trying to pool opposition from the junior middleweight division for his matches.

“It is possible, this is my present, it is my dream fight,” Golovkin said to On the Ropes Boxing Radio. “I think it’s a very interesting fight, for fans, for TV, for everybody. I know I work with HBO, Floyd is with Showtime, but I asked my promoter and he told me it’s possible. I hope.”

Golovkin needs to forget about Mayweather because that fights not going to happen. Mayweather doesn’t need to fight opposition three divisions above his natural weight. Mayweather should be fighting in the 140 lb. division, but he competes at 147 because there are bigger fight opportunities for him in this weight class.

If Mayweather were to say ‘yes’ to a fight with Golovkin then Mayweather would be facing a guy that is 3 divisions bigger than him. Why should Mayweather do this when Golovkin won’t even fight someone one division above his own weight class in WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward.

When Golovkin was asked when he’ll fight Ward, all he could say is he’s not ready to fight at super middleweight. Guess what? Mayweather’s not ready to fight at middleweight, especially against a fighter without a big fan base like Golovkin. If Mayweather were to move up to middleweight to fight Golovkin, he’d might as well take a bigger fight against light heavyweight Bernard Hopkins. That would be a much bigger fight than for Floyd to take on Golovkin. But why does Floyd have to face guys in weight classes much higher than him? It’s not even worth it. If Golovkin wants a big fight, he needs to move up to 168 and 175 and face Ward, Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler, Adonis Stevenson, Hopkins, and Sergey Kovalev.
