Gamboa thinks Rios is trying to take attention away from Mikey

rios7By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa thinks that Brandon Rios is purposely trying to insert himself into his attempt to get a fight against his stable-mate WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia. Gamboa wants to fight Mikey, and expose him to be a flawed fighter not in his class. But Gamboa is finding Rios inserting himself into the picture almost on a daily basis with him trash talking Gamboa on twitter, and asking for a fight with him.

It makes no sense for Gamboa to fight a struggling fighter like Rios given that he’s lost his last two fights, and is barely making the 147 lb. division at this point in his career. Gamboa is starting to wonder whether Rios is being told to start stuff with him in order to get Gamboa’s attention off of Mikey.

If Gamboa destroys Mikey, it’ll be a huge blow to the gym of trainer Robert Garcia in Oxnard, California. He’s already seen his fighters Rios and Nonito Donaire suffer losses recently. If Mikey Garcia suffers a defeat as well, it’ll leave pretty much just Marcos Maidana as the only fighter in Robert Garcia’s stable that is doing well.

Here’s what Gamboa and Rios said to each other earlier today on their social media sites:

Gamboa: “I have to admit that I am impressed with Brandon. You managed to type 3 replies and only cursed once. That is progress.

Rios: “Gamboa, I am done talking about this little women. You grows a pair of ball then talk to me.”

Gamboa: “Hey Brandon Shut up, you’re taking attention away from Mikey. Did they tell you to do that?”

Rios: “Gamboa, [you] fool. I don’t shut up for no one.”

Gamboa: “That is the Rios I know. The only way Brandon show up to see me is if he is previously inform that I am NOT coming.”

Rios: “Sure is. That’s why they told me you was a b**** when you seen Mike [Garcia] in person.”

Gamboa: “You should learn from Mikey, Robert [Garcia Jr.]. A decent and respectful guy. Rios is not a good influence for you.”

To read all of this, it gives me the impression that Rios is trying to fight Mikey’s battles for him. Never mind the fact that Rios would likely take a pounding from Gamboa, it doesn’t make any sense for Gamboa to waste his time stooping to the level of fighting a guy who arguably has lost 3 out of his last 4 fights if you count Rios’ fight with Cuban Richard Abril as a loss for him in addition to his defeats by Mike Alvarado and Pacquiao. Does Rios not have confidence in Mikey’s ability to defeat Gamboa? It get the feeling that may be the case.
