garcia564By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO’s) is ready to get back in the ring on March 15th against an opponent that Golden Boy Promotions is still looking to find for him. Garcia, 25, had the chance to be in the running for Floyd Mayweather Jr’s next fight on May 3rd, but he and his team opted not to make that move. It’s a wise decision because there was nothing in Garcia’s performance in his last fight with Lucas Matthysse that would give you any indication that Danny do anything more than lose and lost badly against Mayweather.

Golden Boy will need to really do a lot of searching if they want to find a decent opponent for Danny, because there’s not a lot of good options for him. If he fights anyone in the top 5 by the WBC, Danny will be stuck facing Viktor Postal, Selcuk Aydin, Robert Ortiz, Humberto Soto, or Alberto Mosquera. Matthysse has already been ruled out for a rematch. Soto was already knocked out by Matthysse in 5 rounds in June 2012, so he’s not a good choice unless Golden Boy is counting on boxing fans having no memory of that fight.

Danny got the win over Matthysse, but it was an ugly fight filled with repeated low blow shots from Danny, along with round after round of repetitive inching by Danny without him being penalized by the referee. Garcia also did a lot of moving to keep out of range of Matthysse, and it needless to say, it spoiled the entire fight.

It was a match-up that had so much potential, because it was placed as the co-feature on the Mayweather vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez card. They thought it would possibly be a more exciting fight than the main event between Mayweather and Cnaelo, but that wasn’t the case. It was a real let down. Garcia should have been penalized repeatedly for the low blows and the clinching, but the referee let him get away with it until the 12th round when he finally took a point away after he hit Matthysse below the belt one too many times.
