Chavez Jr: I have no weight problem

chavez5555By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (47-1-1, 32 KO’s) says he no longer has a weight problem as he gets ready for his March 1st rematch against middleweight contender Brian Vera (23-7, 14 KO’s) for their fight at 168 lbs. at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

To his credit, Chavez Jr. does look like he’s lost a lot of weight. Instead of looking like a big cruiserweight, Chavez Jr. looks more like a slimmed down cruiserweight. Chavez Jr. still looks like a crusierweight, but just not the hulking one who could barely make the 173 lb. catch-weight the last time they fought last September at the StubHub Center, in Carson, California.

Chavez Jr. will need Vera to stand still against the ropes like Andy Lee did in Chavez Jr’s 7th round stoppage win in June 2012. You can call that Chavez Jr’s last non-controversial win because he lost his next fight to Sergio Martinez in September of 2012, and he then fought Vera in August of last year and was given a questionable 10 round unanimous decision victory over him.

“People are going to see I have the fire and hunger back,” Chavez Jr. said to ESPN. “I have been training for 5 months and my weight is perfect. I have more hunger and no weight problem. I am more motivated. I was 40 or 50 percent of myself.”

Chavez Jr. is going to need to throw a lot more punches for him to have a chance to win the fight without controversy like last time.

Vera will have a lot of problems in this fight if Chavez Jr. is a busy fighter like he used to be in the past. Vera won’t be able to stand up to Chavez Jr. if he’s throwing a lot of punches, because he’ll likely be out-weighed by 15-20 lbs. by Julio. Vera is a big middleweight, but he’s not big enough to stand in there with a 190+ Chavez Jr. That’s too much weight for Vera to be giving up in a fight. The only way he can get around that is by staying on the move and picking his spots until the 2nd half of the fight when Chavez Jr. fades.
