Broner says he’s the closest thing to Mayweather

broner666By Allan Fox: Former WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) was interviewed by Showtime last night before the Lamont Peterson vs. Dierry Jean fight in Washington, DC., and during the interview Broner mentioned his desire to fight Marcos Maidana again to try and avenge the loss and recapture his WBA 147 lb. title that Broner loss to Maidana last December in a 12 round unanimous decision.

Broner also compared himself to Floyd Mayweather Jr., and said that he’s the next closest thing to him. One would hope that Broner meant in terms of him being similar to Mayweather outside of the boxing ring, because inside of the ring, Broner is nothing like Mayweather at all.

Broner said “That’s not the first time I took defeat…I am set for a major comeback. Maidana did what he was supposed to do. He threw big shots. I was in a hell of a fight. It comes with the territory. That’s boxing. Sometimes you don’t get hit, but sometimes you do. It’s not about that. It’s about how you get up. And I got up and fought to the last. I know I can beat anybody. If I go on, what will they say? ‘Oh, At least Maidana beat him.’ I’m the closest thing to Floyd Mayweather, so since I took my loss everyone feels like Floyd Mayweather took a loss because I’m the closest thing to him. And still to this day I’m the closest thing to him.”

I’m sure Mayweather doesn’t mind too much that Broner is saying he’s the closest thing to him, but for Broner’s sake, he needs to sit down and take a very close look at Mayweather’s fights to see that he’s nothing like Mayweather at all. Broner does seem to try and copy Mayweather’s fighting style, but he’s so incredibly different as far as skills, hand speed and overall talent that it’s hardly fair to Mayweather that Broner is saying he’s the closest thing to him. I think Tim Bradley is more similar to Mayweather than Broner, and even Bradley is a very poor copy of Mayweather.

Broner needs to take a step back and take a look at his skills, and realize that he’s not another Mayweather. Broner is a good fighter, but he’s nowhere close to Mayweather in talent. At 24, Broner isn’t even as fast as the 36-year-old Mayweather, and without his speed and skills, Broner will always be just a poor knockoff copy of Mayweather.

If Golden Boy Promotions were smart they would try and talk Broner out of him fighting Maidana again. That’s not a fight that Borner will have a good chance of winning due to his lack of power and defense. He needs to move back down in weight and stay away from Maidana and other top welterweights, because we saw Broner’s limits as a welterweight already when he struggled to be Paulie Malignaggi last year. That fight should have served as a big hint to Broner that he doesn’t have the talent to fight at welterweight.
