broner7849999By Dan Ambrose: Unless Floyd Mayweather Jr. steps in to trip up his big plans, Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) will be getting his rematch against WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) on April 19th or the 26th. Broner exercised his rematch clause for his fight with Maidana, and he should be facing him next unless something unforeseen like the Mayweather fight being offered to Maidana wrecks his plans.

Broner extremely motivated to win this fight, and take back his title and his ruined credibility among boxing fans. It’s going to take an impressive win for Broner over Maidana to undo the damage caused by his loss to him last December. Broner loss the fight by the scores of 117-109, 115-109, 115-109. However, the scores don’t really tell you the whole picture about the fight, because Broner was knocked down twice and badly hurt. He took a major beating in the fight, and it’s going to take a lot from him in the rematch to erase the lasting image of Broner on the canvas with both eyes closed after getting dropped by Maidana in the 2nd round.

“They created a monster,” Broner said to ESPN. “Woke up a monster. My mind is set on war. I had a bad night. I’m ready to go back to war and get my belt back.”

It might not be the best idea for Broner to be thinking of going to war with the stronger Maidana, because that’s what Broner tried to do last month, and he was dominated by Maidana. Instead of going to war, Broner should be thinking of a way to avoid a war and win by using his Mayweather-esque boxing skills, but with him using more movement around the ring.

It also wouldn’t hurt if Broner would throw a few more punches every now and then. He throws too many single shots, and that style is no match for the combination punching from Maidana. If Broner were fighting at 135, then single shots would be just fine against most of the guys at that weight. But against a puncher like Maidana, Broner needs to throw combinations and he needs to move a lot more.

Golden Boy Promotions will do well if Broner wins this fight and looks impressive, because he’s seen as the future in boxing. They can’t have the next Mayweather beaten by a simple slugger like Maidana or taken to the very limit by a weak puncher like Paulie Malignaggi. Broner needs to be able to beat these guys, and look sensational in doing so. The fact that he’s not seems to suggest that he’s not the real deal, and definitely not the future of boxing.
