Victor Ortiz wants rematch against Mayweather in 2014

ortiz32By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) is hoping to fight himself into a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. next September if the 26-year-old Ortiz can beat his next scheduled opponent Luis Collazo (34-5, 17 KO’s) on January 30th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Ortiz would then need to fight Danny Garcia, and the winner of that fight is a possible opponent for Mayweather next September. That’s a tough task for an inconsistent fighter like Ortiz to beat both Collazo and Garcia without melting down mentally and tripping himself up in some manner or another like he’s done in the past.

Ortiz was supposed to beat Marcos Maidana and Josesito Lopez, and he lost both those fights. Ortiz was supposed to beat Lamont Peterson, and instead he was held to a draw.

Ortiz said to thaboxingvoice about facing Mayweather again: “Absolutely. Someone’s career is in trouble and it ain’t mine.”

When told that Amir Khan could face Mayweather next, Ortiz laughed out loud and said “Is that a question? Amir’s cool, but he don’t belong in there with Mayweather.”

Mayweather would have to be out of all options for him to face Ortiz again. I’m sure Golden Boy will match Ortiz with Danny Garcia, but Ortiz would be seen the opponent in this fight with Danny likely seen as the guy that would come out on top. But if Ortiz did pull off an upset by beating Garcia, Golden Boy would have to do something else with Ortiz because Mayweather would not likely be willing to make that rematch and see his PPV numbers drop off.

It’s possible that Ortiz can redeem himself one of these days, but it’s going to take more than victories over Collazo and Danny Garcia to get that job done. Ortiz needs to beat some top welterweights like Keith Thurman in addition to beating Danny Garcia for him to be considered as a worthy opponent for Mayweather.

Mayweather knocked Ortiz out in the 4th round in their fight in September 2011 in a fight where Ortiz dropped his guard and tried to hug Mayweather after head-butting him. Mayweather then nailed the defenseless Ortiz with a left-right combination that put him on the canvas for a knockout. Ortiz looked totally clueless from the moment he head-butted Mayweather out of frustration at getting beaten up to the point where he dropped his guard while trying to hug him for the 2nd time.
