Shawn Porter used old blueprint to defeat Alexander

08 Porter victory IMG_3724(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Eric Thomas: Shawn Porter (23-0-1, 14 KO’s) says he used the blueprint from Devon Alexander’s loss to Tim Bradley from 2011 to defeat Alexander (25-2, 14 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision and take his IBF welterweight title last night at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Porter’s father felt that the blueprint that Bradley created would be perfect to beat Alexander a second time by using a lot of aggression and smothering him. It worked well with the judges giving Porter the win by the scores 115-113, 116-112, 116-112.

“My dad knew what to do and he definitely used the Timothy Bradley fight, and I think that we exploited that he couldn’t stand up to my power and that he couldn’t stand up to my aggressiveness,” Porter said via RingTV.

Alexander couldn’t stand up to the way that Porter would lower his head and move forward into him, driving Alexander to the ropes and landing big shots, both with his punches and with his head. The combination of the head, body and the punches was too much for Alexander to handle in this fight. He had problems getting off the ropes, and when he did get some space, Alexander was unable to keep the fight in the center of the ring due to the aggressiveness that Porter showed.

Porter said he was “aggressive, backing him up, making him fight.”

Alexander could have boxed Porter, he didn’t have the same kind of respect for his power that he did against the bigger punching Randall Bailey and Marcos Maidana, both of whom Alexander was able to beat by using his boxing skills. But against Porter, Alexander abandoned his boxing and voluntarily fought his fight. It looked like Alexander didn’t have the same respect with Porter that he did with Maidana and Bailey, and that ultimately cost him the fight due to him taking too many head shots from Porter.

Alexander probably could have won this fight if he had used movement, jabs, and focused on keeping the action in the center of the ring at all times, but he got stuck in a macho type of fight where he seemed to want to prove to Porter that he could out-slug him instead of out-think him.
